#32 Sankofa 3 Strand Bracelet

Festive. bright, and totally unique, this triple-strand bracelet will whisk you away to another land with its funky assortment of Ghanian and Malian beads.

The small, multi-colored trade beads are sourced from West Africa, but originate from Europe. Trade beads are decorative glass beads used between the 16th and 20th century as a currency to exchange for goods, and services. Made to ease the passage of European explorers and then traders mainly across the African continents, the beads were made throughout Europe although the Venetians dominated production. The charm hanging from one of the strands was purchased in Mali, West Africa, during my service as a Peace Corps Volunteer. From what I was told, the name of this charm is "SANKOFA" and it serves as a reminder to "Go Back & Learn from Your Mistakes." Brass Spacer beads are also West African--the brass toggle clasp and antiqued brass chain are not. There is also a small smattering or turquoise rondelles throughout the piece.

Bracelet is 8 inches, including the clasp. Charm drops down about 1/2 an inch.
